My Washington cabin, December 2010(all photos by author)

This morning, two days before Christmas, my partner remarked on how quickly the time flies. It seems like we just had Christmas, he said. He wondered if it had something to do with old age. I said it probably did. I can’t imagine younger people — say those with fewer than three decades under their belts — lamenting the rapid passage of time. Maybe they do though and I’ve just forgotten. I think that also has something to do with old age.

Then I tried to remember how I’d spent previous holiday seasons. An exercise in futility, I could barely recall last year. So I had a look through my photos, which — thank you Apple — are organised in a way I couldn’t hope to achieve.

What fascinating things was I doing in 2010 for example?

If you’re already yawning, that’s ok. Maybe just flip through the photos, they get increasingly exciting and provocative. . . but curb your expectations.

2010 My Washington cabin

That December, I was still living in a little cabin on the edge of the Olympic National Forest in Port…

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
