Fascinating article, Nicole--it spoke directly to me. I feel that I'm always trying to get to a deeper truth in my writing, to go beyond the superficial. Sometimes this happens, other times I'm aware of using humour, self-deprecation and other distancing devices. I've written for years and recognise that not everything has to be deep and meaningful, there are other reasons to write--inform, educate, offer a vicarious experience etc.--but on a deeply personal level, I feel a great need to engage in the kind of writing you describe. Thanks for a thought provoking piece.

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
