LIVING IN FRANCE

French Food Is Fine, But Sometimes I Crave Some Junky American Sweet Treats . . .

Last Friday, I met a visiting American friend, Trishia Jacobs-Carney, for lunch in Beziers, the nearest town to my village. Although we’d communicated back and forth on Facebook, we were introduced by a mutual friend in the States and had never met face-to-face.

I’d described myself and what I’d be wearing — frizzy blonde hair, denim jacket — and waited for her at an outdoor cafe. I’d seen her Facebook picture so I thought I’d recognise her, but what tipped me off as Trishia walked toward me was the large red cardboard box she was carrying.

Some months earlier she’d read a post I’d written about Little Debbie’s — a guilty pleasure junk food treat I’d once enjoyed, but missed here in France. Missed it so much that I’d asked my daughter to bring some LDs with me when she visited. So much so that I wrote three posts on the subject.

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
