Great story, Bev. It sounds funny, writing from my little French village, that I envy your experience, but I do. I have an upcoming visit to the States and I can't wait to have a truck stop, or even a Denny's or iHop breakfast--what a great story opportunity, just watching everyone. Plus some hash browns and coffee.

Also interesting about the man having his meal comped because he'd found eggshell--I absolutely can't imagine that happening in France. My experience with complaints (which I seldom bother to make anyway) is a sort of indifferent shrug.) Even a meal that was largely untouched caused no comment or question from the server.

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
