I felt much the way you described during the ten years I spent in the PR department of a medical organisation. The money and prestige was all great, but I pitched story ideas to journalists that I'd have preferred to write myself.

Eventually, I quit. I was 50, still needed to make a living so it was a difficult decision. Fortunately, I managed to build a free-lance career, not the same kind of money I earned working for the corporation, but I was a whole lot happier and never looked back.

Good luck with whatever direction to take. As you say, writing will always be there for you.

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
