Was it Reagan who spoke about Morning in America? Today feels like Mourning in America — at least for over half the population. And it’s not just mourning in America; it’s mourning all over the world.

Mourning here in France, where I live. Mourning, literally and figuratively, in Ukraine and Gaza and other places where the suffering of innocents is incidental to the ambitions of those in power.

How can it be otherwise? “What kind of world do we live in?” my daughter texted me from the States. “I feel sick, I don’t even know what to do.”

No point in rehashing and repeating all the things he said and did, all the things he said he will do. The revenge he’s frothing at the mouth to exact on his enemies. No point in dwelling on all the fears he’s created. The unthinkable has happened.

The question is, now what?

I’ve been up all night watching the horror unfold. Maybe I should have rewatched Psycho instead. I feel weirdly devoid of feeling. From a practical standpoint, I’ve…
