Interesting comment, Ted. I never made the Voltaire connection. French in this rural area of French, especially older generations who have lived nowhere else, has a very strong twang, reflectingthe Occitan influence. Also difficult to me to understand. The language, while no longer spoken (to my knowledge) is used on road signs/place names.
