Interesting piece. I am British, but lived in the US for decades, had a green card, then in my late 60's decided to move to France. Alone. I manage on little more than my US social security. I've been here eight years and have no desire at all to return to the US--like you, I couldn't afford to even if I had the desire. I recently got my carte de titre, a necessity thanks to Brexit. I've also given up my green card; the last time I flew back to the States, I was given such a hassle by immigration about my status that I decided to hell with it.

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
