I also think that the desire to look/be seen as youthful stems in part from the negative stereotypes about old age, or even not so old age. 70 year olds depicted in films, TV, etc-- fumbling old codgers endlessly searching for their specs. Really, what active, involved, articulate 70 year old wants to be seen in this way? So we lie, slap on cremes and get faces botoxed (not guilty of the latter) all in the hope of evading the negative stereotypes. My theory anyway.
