Loss of dignity. I read many of Hanif Kureishi's blogs written after a fall in Rome that left him paralysed and almost completely dependent on others. Dependent on others to perform the intimate functions he could no longer do himself. Of all the many losses he's had to endure, the loss of dignity must surely top the list.
