AGE IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY . . . AND SO IS FRANCE

My New Newsletter Will Take A Behind The Scenes Look At Why I Moved To France, Alone, At 68

It will be provocative, mysterious and ever so slightly crazy.

Actually, I hope it will entertain, inform and perhaps inspire anyone who wonders if they’re too old to start a new life chapter. But a little background about why I’ve decided to launch (is that pretentious?) Old Age Is A Foreign Country . . . And So Is France.

When I joined Medium last November, I was trying to complete the first draft of a memoir about my move to France. Somehow it wasn’t coming together and the more I worked at it, the more despondent I grew.

Soon, I dreaded even sitting down to write. The feeling wasn’t exactly new. I’d felt the same way when work stalled on a novel I’d been trying to finish. So my only goal on Medium was to re-establish some kind of writing routine. To do that, I committed to writing and posting something every day. Anything. The ephemera of daily life.

I had no thought of an audience, money or anything other than just writing again. By the end of the first week, I think I had about fifteen followers. I was thrilled and, of course, motivated.

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
