My personal opinion--showing work to family and non writing friends is not a good idea. If they're objective and point out problems, you'll either think (or say) they don't know what they're talking about and there will probably be bad feelings all around. Or, if they praise it to the hilt you might accept this as gospel which, if they're wrong, won't help in the long run. I say find a good critique group.
