My very unscientific survey--just observing people I know--tells me that men seem to do less well at being alone and fending for themselves than women. It seems especially true if the relationship was more of the traditional sort--wife did the cooking, etc. Left to their own devices men who once had this sort of relationship seem to struggle more.
