MEDIUM’S WEIRD & WHACKY WAYS
So As Medium Boosts, Stats Drop & Subscribers Don’t Receive E-Mails
My thanks to those who responded
Yesterday, I wrote a story and, as always, checked the e-mail to subscribers box. At least twelve subscribers and — based on calls to friends who have signed up to receive e-mail alerts — there are probably quite a few more who weren’t notified. I have around 385 subscribers who also, presumably, took the time to sign up for e-mails. Without e-mail notifications, stories can easily be overlooked.
Medium frequently sends updates on my stats — your audience is growing etc., but is less efficient about offering help when things go wrong. No explanation for why stories aren’t e-mailed, for example, or — I can only dream — why algorithms take so many roller coaster dips and climbs, lately dips.
I appreciate the responses from readers who confirmed they didn’t receive the e-mailed version of my story, but I’d love some sort of explanation from Medium.
While Medium is boosting certain stories and conferring untold riches on a chosen few, it would be great if they paid a little more attention to some basics. Like e-mail subscribers, for instance. What’s the point of signing up if you’re not notified when writers publish?
I recognise that this is only one story, but it’s one that I happened to notice. As stats and earnings inexplicably dwindle — with no explanation as to why — I wonder how often this happens. Not just to me, but to others.
OK, rant over. Once again, I’d appreciate your thoughts. A few from Medium wouldn’t be amiss either.
