Thanks for a poignant and thought-provoking story. Old (very old) age at any cost (as described above) is, in my opinion not something to welcome.

My mother died shortly after her 100th birthday. She was active and sharp until, probably her last two years. After that, her decline was painful to observe.

I'm 78 and, like you, would rather "be present and fully engaged in my life right now" than hold on to extreme old age.
