Thanks for responding, Elliott. The things you describe-- evaporation of the local social scene, widowed spouses returning to the UK, Brexit created difficulties are all very familiar in the ex-pat community here in my part of France.

Like you though, I can't imagine living in the UK again, or returning to the States. In that sense, I've definitely made my home in France.
