The US attitude about lunch is not unlike the sacrosanct attitude to lunch in France . . . only probably longer here. I don't know first hand whether French workers eat at their desks, but I do know that everything--shops, businesses etc.--close around 12:30 and most don't open until after 2 p.m. Even after living in France for years, I still forget that on occasion.
