Ugh, it all sounds horribly famliar. Legitimate publishers don't require payment for publishing a book. Those that do are vanity publishers and, my opinion, should be avoided. Have you checked out some of the smaller indy publishers Writers Market? There's also a lot of information on agents (another route to go) and publishers on line. Good luck!
