What’s Up With Friend Links?
I can send links to some friends, others are prompted to open accounts.
I want to share my Rome stories with my friend Kit — who having accompanied me to Rome naturally wants to read them. I’ve sent friend links to other people who have read them with no problem. When Kit tries to open the link, she’s prompted to open an account.
Although she once had — or may still have — an account, I don’t see why that would make any difference. Here’s a short version of Medium’s explanation of Friend links:
Friend Links are a tool for writers to guarantee that friends, family, and fans have free access to their paywalled stories.

Since I’m also a ‘friend of Medium’, hence the little heart- thing on my profile, my understanding is that I can send as many friend links as I want. Is that no longer the case?
And, infuriatingly, it now seems necessary to check a box if you want your story behind the paywall — ie to get paid. I thought…
