DISPATCH FROM KNEE REEDUCATION

In the month I’ve been at the clinique recovering from knee replacement surgery — or as the clinique puts it, reeducation my knee, I’ve had a daily schedule of therapy sessions, 30-minute walks and stretching on the arthromoteur. The latter took up several hours every day, including an hour on Saturday.

Yesterday, I was kicked off — or put another way, having reached the required 100 degree extension I no longer needed an arthrometer. Instead, I sat on a chair, one foot on a small skateboard I rolled back and forth.

This morning, I’d been rolling my skateboard for about ten minutes, when I felt a sharp pain immediately under the skin where the stitches had been. I rested a while, then tried again. Same pain.

I took the ascenseur (lift) to my chambre on the third floor and rang for the nurse. After I’d explained the problem, she gave me an ice pack, told me to keep it in place for 20 minutes, then to call if I still felt the pain.

Twenty minutes passed and the pain was unchanged. The nurse brought in a senior nurse who removed part of the dressing and said she didn’t think it was anything serious, but she’d call the doctor.

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
